Helvetica then, Helvetica Now Before there was Helvetica, there was Neue Haas Grotesk. A sans serif font is, as the name implies, a font without serifs. Millar & Richard's early 20th century Grotesque series provided rudimentary geometry, serpentine curves, and the narrow but welcome aperture of certain forms. Founders Grotesk is a contemporary amalgamation of classic grotesks. This is one of the most utilized typefaces available. Also check out: National, Akkurat, Aktiv Grotesk, Graphik, Lab Grotesque, FF Real, Gräbenbach, Proto Grotesk. Whereas Helvetica (or rather its predecessor Neue Haas Grotesk) was styled in response to Akzidenz Grotesk, Aktiv Grotesk is the 21st century equivalent - positioned by its designer Bruno Maag specifically as an alternative to the ubiquitous typeface that he openly denounces as the 'vanilla ice cream' of a designer's type library. The design originated from Royal Grotesk light by Ferdinand Theinhardt. CSS: font remained as Arial after changing the font-family to -apple-system fonts. Excluding h1s, I have changed this to Helvetica Neue (Arial on non-Mac platforms). You can play the compare game and explore the differences. At small (~14px) sizes, the difference is mostly indistinguishable to non-designers.
